What is Yunnan Baiyao?

Yunnan Baiyao(云南白药), a.k.a. yunnan paiyao, yun nan bai-yao, yunan bai yao, yunan paiyao, yunnan pai-yao, hunnan baiyao, yuhnahn pie yow, White Medicine from Yunnan, has been extensively used in Asia for many years and is considered a sort of miracle herbal formula for wounds, pain, and hemorrhage. It is famous for being carried in their first aid kits by the Vietcong during the Vietnam War. It has been used by Chinese soldiers for hundreds of years. In China, its reputation is similar to that of penicillin in the U.S.

Function:

Stops bleeding, dispels blood stasis, disperses swelling, clears heat, resolves toxins, relives pain.

Indications:

Use internally for swelling, bruising or bleeding in acute trauma. Also useful in other bleeding disorders including postpartum hemorrhage, nosebleed, blood in urine or stool, bleeding ulcer, and menorrhagia. Can be used internally for infected wounds or for postpartum blood stasis. Also used for wind-damp bi syndromes (arthritis and rheumatism), and promoting circulation in the muscles. Also to reduce swelling in sore throat.

Apply topically as an emergency or first aid medicine to stop bleeding in traumatic wounds, and to prevent infection. This product is antibacterial as well as homeostatic. Cuts heal quickly with even a single application, and with a butterfly bandage it can help seal smaller wounds that might otherwise require stitches.

Yunnan Baiyao is useful for any type of open wound and any kind of surgery. It reduces recovery time for surgery by half because it mends injured blood vessels. It does not interfere with Western sedative drugs, so can be used the same day as surgery. By immediately activating blood circulation, it helps resolve bleeding, pain, and swelling. It heals oozing wounds and damaged blood vessels, while expelling pus and counteracting toxins.

It is also used for traumatic swelling or bruising, or for other blood disorders including thrombocytopenic purpura and leukemia.

Unlike Western pain drugs, Yunnan Baiyao does not turn off pain centers in the brain, but instead facilitates circulation, bringing oxygen to the injury. Cuts heal quickly with even a single application, and with a butterfly bandage it can help seal smaller wounds that might otherwise require stitches. In various clinical studies, it has shown to reduce clotting time by 33% to 55%.

Contraindications
Use is contraindicated in individuals with allergic reaction to Yunnan Baiyao. It is also contraindicated internally for pregnant women.

About Hemangiosarcoma and Bleeding Tumors in Animals

Hemangiosarcoma is a very deadly cancer in dogs, mainly Goldens and German Shepherds, which generally isn’t diagnosed until the dog collapses or dies. This sort of cancer is genetic, hereditary, and it runs in bloodlines. It causes a tumor in the heart (also seen in the spleen, and other organs) that leads to fluid build-up in the pericardium. Yunnan Baiyao has been used successfully to relieve the fluid build up and help with the dog’s comfort level. Typical dosage: 2 capsules, twice a day, with food.

Suggested Dosages and How to Use

Dosages (human) according to the manufacturer:

Internally:

Take 0.25 to 0.5 gram (1 to 2 capsules), 4x day. In general, not for long term use.

Do not exceed 0.5 g, once every four hours.

In cases of bleeding, mix with water and drink.

In cases of swelling without bleeding, mix with wine.

Children age 2 to 5 years, 0.03 g each time.

Children over 5 years, 0.06 g each time.

PROHIBITED INTERNALLY DURING PREGNANCY.

Before surgery: Take 1 red pill and 2 capsules.

After surgery: Take 2 capsules 2x daily for several days. Do not take Yunnan Baiyao for more than 1-2 weeks. It can be weakening over a period of time. If necessary, combine with a tonic formula such as mushroom extracts or neutral ginsengs.

Externally:

Apply directly to bleeding wound (clean first, and bandage afterwards).

In deep or wide wounds, squeeze cut together, pour powder on, and apply pressure or keep closed for 1 to 2 minutes, or until bleeding has stopped.

About the red pill: The manufacturer recommends that one take the single red pill (bao xian zi) be taken in cases of serious wounds or bleeding. This is used to prevent shock from blood loss. It does not stop bleeding. Use only one red pill per day. Ingredients are unknown. The red pill is very small and located in a tiny dimple in the center of the foil sheet of capsules (1 red pill per sheet of 16 capsules). In the bottle of powder, the red pill is encased in the wad of cotton found when you open the bottle.

Notes: Avoid consuming cold foods, like fish, broad beans, citrus (sour) and dairy. Yunnan Baiyao has a warming quality while these foods have a cooling quality. Cold foods require strong digestion as well. Therefore to achieve the best results when taking Yunnan Baiyao, they should not be combined together. Other hot consumables, like alcohol, chicken and goat meat are indicated as promoting the healing effects. If taking Yunnan Baiyao makes you dizzy or upsets your stomach, take it with warm soup. Take with a sip of wine to treat chronic gastritis.

As with many herbal therapies, dose ranges of Yunnan Baiyao are poorly defined and widely variable. Dosing is often ‘to effect’ and may vary depending on the cause of the bleeding. The following dose recommendations have been gathered from a variety of sources, including VIN postings, the CAVM list discussions, textbooks and continuing education talks:

Yunnan Baiyao is gaining popularity as a herbal medicine to support
EIPH in horses. The following information on dosage for race horses was copied from www.racetowin.ca. It has not been verified and is provided only for its informational content.

Suggested Use: The day before competition, give 1 full bottle of the Yunnan Baiyao powder, AM & PM, but save the red pills. On the morning of competition give 1 full bottle of the powder again saving the red pill. Then at the Lasix shot use the 4th bottle of Yunnan Baiyao powder. At this time give all the 4 red pills that you have saved to the horse.

Special Note: If the horse has bled thru everything that vets, herbs, vitamins, acupuncture can do, you may try 2 bottles at a time.

Side Effects:

There are no known side effects when Yunnan Baiyao is taken as recommended. Do not take while pregnant or nursing.

About the Manufacturer and Ingredients

Currently, Yunnan Baiyao is only legitimately produced by Yunnan Baiyao Group Co., Ltd, one of the top state pharmaceutical companies in China. It was produced and exported to USA under the Camellia brand name before 1998. All the Yunnan Baiyao that possesses the product name Yunnan Paiyao under the Camellia brand in today’s market are not genuine Yunnan Baiyao made by Yunnan Baiyao Group Co.

Ingredients:

tian qi (Radix Notoginseng) 40.0 %

san yu cao (Herba Ajuga Forrestii) 17.0%

shan yao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) 13.3%

chuan shan long (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Nippon.) 11.5%

lao he cao (Herba Geranii) 7.2%

ku liang jiang (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Parviflora) 6.0%

bai niu dan (Herba Inulae Cappae) 5.0%

This formula does not contain ox bile. It is our opinion that the belief that this product contains ox bile came through confusion over the name of the listed ingredient, Innula Cappa (Bai Nui Dan) whose Chinese name translates to “White Ox Gallbladder”.
